Louise Payne

Louise graduated in 1997 with a first class honours degree in Visual Arts (Lancaster University). After several years travelling, teaching, and exploring the spiritual life, she discovered Wales and settled here in 2003.

During the last 11 years, her work has centred on portrait drawing. Her practice involves permeating the paper with linseed oil, and drawing onto this surface. This process has been recorded since the 1500's and works by Italian Renaissance Masters using this technique still survive.

Linseed oil lends to paper a luminous quality, a parchment-like feel, and exudes a sense of antiquity through its warm colour; which darkens over time, and may form crystalline patterns within it, adding further uncontrolled and natural qualities to the work.

Her sensitive approach embodies a sense of the sacred and the visionary.

She is available for illustration work as well as portrait commissions.

In 2012, Louise was elected a Member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, Conwy, and serves on their committee. This year she has been selected to act as one of the judges for the Kyffin Williams Drawing Prize, Ynys Mon.
