Sue came to ceramics following a career in Mathematics, mostly as a teacher and lecturer. Twelve years ago, Sue and her husband chose to move to Dolgellau in North Wales and they have since made their home here, opening their studio ‘Dipsy Dragon’.
Sue is almost entirely self-taught and still takes great pleasure in experimenting and finding new methods and techniques. Being very much an outdoor person she takes great inspiration from the wildlife around her as well as the myths of Wales. Her work is largely figurative and, rather than being painstakingly accurate, she takes great delight in capturing the essential detail of a bird or creature which brings it to life and gives every piece a unique character.
Sue's other great pleasure is in teaching. She has a number of regular students and artists, some of whom have been working with her for many years and she welcomes drop in groups of friends or families. Their motto is ‘embrace the wonky’ as over time they have accepted that ceramic pieces don’t always come out as you expected them to but often better!
Creativity is essential to Sue's being and while ceramics is her primary passion she loves to engage with other materials, for example glass and wool.
