Tony Goode

Tony was introduced to pottery almost 25 years ago when, while on holiday here, he was invited to take his daughter to a private pottery in the Fathew valley, a few miles from Tywyn. This became a regular feature on family visits and discovering something that he enjoyed for himself, he was soon taking a lump of clay home and fashioning small pots of his own. This continued for several years. Moving to live in Tywyn in 2019, the pottery now a community pottery and relocated into the town, he was able to become a member in 2022. Tony quickly discovered that this was an all consuming passion and thoroughly enjoys both the making and being part of a vibrant pottery community.

Working almost exclusively in stoneware, he was drawn to this by the infinite possibilities of colour and movement in the alchemic glazes. Much of his work is hand built using various methods, he makes an eclectic mixture of mostly functional pieces. Again the endless variations in form that can be developed through hand built processes is an attraction. Tony is constantly experimenting with both clay and glazes, a wide range of work flows from his endeavors.

A lifelong passion for plants and growing them is sometimes reflected in his work. He takes some of his pottery when he travels the UK giving talks to garden clubs and specialist societies where vases and items with floral and natural history motifs are popular. After a career in retail management, he now works (very) part-time in catering for the Talyllyn Railway where he has also been a train guard since the late 1980’s, another interest that occasionally features in his work. Tony is happy to consider commissions, repeats and requests for bespoke items.
