Jane Whittle

Jane came to live in the Dysynni Valley in 1989. After half a lifetime as a visitor and traveller she settled and began to make a garden – a quiet space for her family to get together, for groups or friends – and for her, of intermittent solitude.

Through years of long distance walking, she had developed an intimate relationship with landscapes, and, since living here, her work has come to reflect a sense of identification with this particular place, in all its moods and seasons. This kind of connection, and transformation, given sufficient solitary space and silence, can happen in a moment, or take years to mature. Eventually she began to use layers of coloured and textured translucent paper to hint at layers of meaning, perception and discovery. She wants the result to be as enigmatic as what provoked it, hopefully involving the viewer in a similar process.

Jane has exhibited regularly in Wales since 2000, including at the Ceridigion Museum, Aberystwyth; MOMA, Machynlleth; Welsh Artist of the Year and the Albany, Cardiff; Harlech Theatre; Bangor Museum; Plas Glan y Weddw; the RCA Conway; Cafe Croesor - and elsewhere with Art North Wales and CRYD.

Her work, including watercolours, drawings, prints, cards and books of poems, may be seen in her barn gallery (by appointment).
